Applying Faith to Prayer

Matthew 15:21-28 had a revealing truth that many may overlook its meaning. Here it is summarized, however I do encourage you to open up your own Bible and read for yourself.

There is this woman crying out to Jesus, “Lord son of David, have mercy on me! My demon daughter is possessed and suffering terribly.” Check this out, …His disciples were more focused on if this woman was annoying Jesus by crying out making a scene and basically begging Jesus for a miracle. Jesus kept quite the Bible says. He was chill’n and unbothered by her begging yet the disciples were more focused on “feelings then the facts presented.” I love how Jesus always prompts us back with questions or phrases to make us ”think” for yourselves. So He says to this woman, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” The woman came and knelt before him, “Lord help me please.” She continued. (How many times can we catch ourselves doing this, I know I’m not the only one.)

So get this…

1) She well knew He was the Messiah and gave that as recognition

2) She even knelt (postured) before Him. So there was no denying that she knew in fact whom He was.

That wasn’t the issue …. So what was the issue ? I love it how Jesus answers, ”it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” Why did Jesus answer to her like this? Does it not say if you ask anything in my name it will be given? So why was He not healing this woman’s daughter when she was continually asking for a miracle, her reverence and posture believed Jesus could make it happen but why did she have to beg? (Note what I just said, she believed JESUS could do it)

I’ll tell you exactly why…. We can pray all we want knowing Jesus is King of Kings we can publicly posture ourselves in reverence to God.  We can have tears running down our cheeks for years disputing our urgencies to Jesus but if we don’t apply FAITH behind the action, it won’t do much at all.  Sure, miracles can happen in His name all day long but without US HAVING THE FAITH TO APPLY IT He can’t move. Jesus was waiting for her! The following verse shows exactly what I’m saying.

The Canaanite woman replies with wisdom and says, “yes it is Lord, EVEN THE DOGS EAT THE CRUMBS THAT FALL FROM THERE MASTERS TABLE.” (Geez I can see Jesus smiling at the wisdom with her answer) and rightfully so as He is a fair and a Just King.  He then at THAT MOMENT the Bible says gives this woman the miracle she asked for after replying to her, “woman, you have GREAT FAITH! Your request is granted.

Lesson:

1) Begging God doesn’t do anything without applying faith, even the size of a mustard seed is enough to make action.  So don’t blame God when your miracle isn’t coming …. Keep pressing with faith, it will shift !

2) Having little compassion like the disciples almost missed the opportunity to minister. Stop caring so much what it “looks like” and just act in faith. (This lesson wasn’t just for the woman but the disciples as well; two birds with one stone)

3) Sometimes God will test our faith as He gave us the authority but what is authority without faith?

So next time we pray remember to use our faith in applying the word of God and not just asking God to magically make something happen.  He’s given us the keys to the kingdom.  We must use them for Him to enter that house.
